Video Projects: Khristian A. Howell

I know, it’s been a while since my last blog post here. October has been a very busy time, with a lot of things happening all at once. First off, I want to share with you another video segment I shot, produced, and edited – this time, for my wife’s business www.khristianahowell.com. The video serves as a trailer to the new e-book she has written as a guide book to help other independent artists.

Khristian was also featured in the October edition of Better Homes & Gardens. Here’s a picture I took of the article. I am really excited to her business taking off, and thrilled to help out wherever I can!

Breaking into Broadcasting Project: Ready to go!

I reached my goal! The project re-design is now complete, right on schedule.

After months of tweaks and changes, Breaking into Broadcasting is now officially ready for beta testing. I am excited to finally start sharing this site within the industry. It is greatly improved from the simply blog format it started as, and I believe incorporates some useful features to help people who are trying to break into broadcasting.

Starting today, September 6th, beta testing will begin and run through Friday, September 17th. If you are interested joining during this period, please do so and send me details about your experience on the site. I am interested in getting as much feedback as possible before I push the site forward and share it with more people.

There are still several features from the original format – the e-books section remains, as does the monthly video conference. Some of the new features include “B-Roll” (the new B-Roll icon featured prominently on the picture above) – a social community for broadcast veterans and beginners to share stories, offer advice, and create personal profiles. There is also a new Classified Ads section for job seekers to promote themselves to hiring managers.

Last but certainly not least, there is a new Job Bank (with both user & employer access permissions), and a Stations List that currently lists the top 120 media markets, along with links to employment pages for television stations in those markets. Both a radio list, and an international stations list are coming next!

Let me know what you think!

On Assignment: Heat Deaths

We were on assignment in Gainesville, GA covering a story about high school student athletes practicing in extreme heat. There have been four heat related student deaths as of August 2011; two of the deaths occurred in the state of Georgia. Here are a few behind the scenes pictures from the shoot that day. To see one of the live reports I did on the issue you can view the video here. There is also a full length piece you can view here, via CNN.com.

Video Projects: PBS Stories

Gang Violence in the Yakima Valley

Here’s a blast from the past!

This is a collection of long format docu-news projects I did for KCTS-TV 9, PBS for Seattle, Washington. As I re-organize my personal site here, I wanted to make sure to keep these available to share with you.

Each one of these story aired on the news magazine program “KCTS-9 Connects. It was a great experience working with that station’s talented staff of photographers and editors. Hope you enjoy.

On Assignment: World Cup Women Return

Photojournalist Dante Tinsely in the shot here from a story we covered this weekend. Several women who participated in the World Cup returned to Atlanta from the game in Germany – the U.S. team placed second to Japan in a game decided by penalty kicks. In advance of Sunday’s scheduled game, the Women’s Professional Soccer league team The Atlanta Beat held a special ceremony for its players, and for women of the opposing Magicjack team.

I remember one fan I interviewed that day nearly broke down in tears when describing how proud she was of the U.S. team, bringing more attention to women’s soccer. It was a pretty cool event! Here are a few pictures.

Breaking into Broadcasting: Major Re-Design

So, this is what I’m up to when I’m not tracking down a story or working on-air!

Behind the scenes, I’ve been very busy these past few weeks! If you’ve visited breakingintobroadcasting.com recently, you are probably already aware that a lot of things are moving and shifting around at all times of the day and night. From the kitchen table to coffee shops, I have been working to usher in a new look – new features – and a social network in the new Breaking into Broadcasting. I did a soft-launch about a year-and-a-half ago, and since then I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t work with regards to the project’s identity, overall layout and functionality. As of today, the project is still under construction, but should be ready for a hard launch unveiling and announcement by summer’s end.

The goal of Breaking into Broadcasting is to provide a constructive, supportive forum to help people interested in broadcasting and broadcast journalism. I have always enjoyed working with people to help them grow in this business, so building BiB seemed like the logical next step. I’m excited about the potential this project has to pay it forward. I will announce the completion of my fixes/changes to the BiB website here.

Video Projects: $21K and climbing!

When Atlanta Artist and Pattern Designer Jessica Swift approached me about making a quick video for her Kickstarter project, I got excited! She had an ambitions plan – her goal was to raise at least $18,000 to start manufacturing her own brand of rain boots, and she wanted a quirky, cool, simply-shot video with a choppy, YouTube-esque feel. Given that video is so crucial to any successful Kickstarter project, Jessica wanted to make sure that her video was not only appealing, but also that people could immediately connect with her personality, and her goal.

We decided that a simple approach would be the best approach. I actually shot and edited most of this video on my iPhone! Within 20 days of posting her video and promoting her Kickstarter Project via twitter, facebook, etc., Jessica quickly surpassed her goal! As of July 14th, the rain boots project has amassed $21,385 and counting! I had a great time working with Jessica, and am really thrilled to see her having so much success!

GHM Demo: Seattle, Washington

This is a travel demo I did for a company in Seattle, Washington about a year ago. I worked with photographer Adam Knight to create the piece, and I feel good about the product we produced. It flows well, feels “fresh”, and has good energy to it. The segment, dubbed GHM Demo, is only a promotional example of the larger piece we proposed to build out.  This year, there may be a renewed possibility of developing more travel related segments, similar to this clip. Stay tuned! More details as they become available!
